Sometimes, simplicity is best which shines in Fall Guys. Who knew a game about a bunch of weird beans could be so entertaining? When Falls Guys was released 1 month ago it overran the internet with over 1.5 million players within the first 24 hours of release and becoming one of the most viewed games on Twitch during its first month. How was it able to do this?
Again, I believe it’s simplicity as the gameis deceivingly easy to learn. The only controls you know is how to move, grab/push, jump and dive. That’s it. Even young kids can learn how to play within a few minutes. Then you can dive right into the mini-games.
This is a battle royal game, which is a winner-take-all game. If you’ve watched the Hunger games, or watched gameshows like Wipe Out, you’ll get the gist. 60 players start each round, and players get eliminated during each round until 1 remains taking the crown.
Getting to that crown is the difficult part, and can remain elusive to even the most talented player. The mini-games are simple themselves but the rush to the finish line, even in the opening rounds, can be an insanely chaotic mess. A simple misstep can ruin an otherwise perfect run and turn a grown man into puddle of rage-filled tears.
You will get drawn into this game, it’s okay. I’m still playing this over and over even though it’s so hard to get a crown. My family loves it, and my kids laugh hysterically when I destroyed by a fan or launched into a sea of slime. It’s an easy game and a good way to unwind to after a long day. Just remember to take a step back if you play for long periods of time. Battle royale games are notorious for this, as “one more game” can unexpectedly lead to you playing for hours on end in search of that rare win.
Overall Rating: 4/5
Positives: Easy to learn, easy to play. A very active online community as well will keep this game going with frequent updates in the years to come. Their official twitter is one of the best game twitter feeds out there. Here’s a link to their very spicy tweets.
Negatives: Very difficult to win. Exhaustion can set in and eventually drive players away as the great majority of players will never win a crown. This is not unique to Fall Guys, as it is an unfortunate part of all battle royale games. Still, the weird beans are hilarious to watch, even when you’re losing over and over again you can’t help but laugh at yourself.
Child Friendliness: 5/5
Technically yes, there is “cartoon mischief” but its even milder than the old Looney Toons cartoon violence. None of the beans ever get hurt, injured or die, even after getting catapulted to the moon. Your pride may get hurt in the process though, no guarantees there.
